Ramdom association will open an exhibition at Gagliano del Capo from the December 21st, 2017 to January 14th, 2018 on behalf of the artist residency ‘Sino alla fine del mare - Until the end of the sea’ along with the visual artwork ‘HALL’ by Luca Coclite.
In May of 2017, Ramdom launched a call for the project ‘Sino alla fine del mare - Until the end of the sea’, with the support of SIAE | Sillumina - Copia privata per i giovani per la cultura and MiBACT.
Through this initiative, four artists under 35 years old have been able to participate to a six months artist residency, from January to December, at Gagliano del Capo, Lecce.
The selected artists - Simona Di Meo, Roberto Memoli, Nuvola Ravera and Jacopo Rinaldi -, will present their work at Lastation, on the first floor of Train Station Gagliano - Leuca, and at other locations in town.
The artist residency, within the project ‘Investigation on the Extreme Lands’, aims to develop a new mapping of the area of Capo di Leuca: the artists have been requested to study the territory, adapting their language to inhabitants and occasional visitors.
The production process has been accompanied by a program of activities aimed at studying the human and natural landscape, which also included the workshop on performative practices by the curator Claudio Zecchi.
Simona Di Meo (Rome, 1986) influenced by how the radio signal that in some points of Gagliano del Capo overlaps with the one from neighboring states, in her work ‘Crossing borders is an intimate act’ explores the concept of frontier, relating communities that reside on the Italian, Greek and Albanian border. The artist collected testimonies from local community and gave life to a billboard campaign in the public space.
With the installation ‘Intervallo’ on one of the trains that stop at Gagliano-Leuca, the last station in the south-east of Italy, Jacopo Rinaldi (Rome, 1988) focuses on the landscape in motion through images taken from a film of a newsreel dated from 1935. By replacing the drapes of one of the historic railcars that run daily over the south-east railway, the artist created special window curtains. A work in motion.
Roberto Memoli (Modugno, 1989) with ‘Verderame’ creates a sound installation that recalls the custom of fire lit in the central square of Gagliano del Capo on the day of the winter solstice. While the auspicious rite has been interrupted since the nineties, the olive trees of Puglia are affected by a disease that causes their rapid drying. On the occasion of the opening reception, the sound installation will "light up" the city center, from 5:00 pm to midnight, while the video installation will be open to public at Lastation.
Nuvola Ravera (Genova, 1984) researched on the "psychic residues" of a landscape, both anthropized and natural, isolating some nodal elements. Her work ‘Le storie dell’azzurro. Pratiche sulla soglia per malattie immaginarie’ proposes a series of reactive actions, which work both as a lenitive and as an indicator of the features of the place detected by herself. Developed in various places in the country and at Lastation. They are traces scattered in border areas and in ordinary places. The performance will take place on the opening day in the historic Bar2000 from 7.00 pm to 10.00 pm hourly.
In addition, Ramdom presents the visual artwork ‘HALL’ by Luca Coclite, as a result of a personal research of the artist in collaboration with the director Mattia Epifani. Conceived in 2017 within the ‘Et in terra pacis’ project, it was created thanks to the contribution of the New Works - Visual Arts SIAE | Sillumina - Copia privata per i giovani, per la cultura and MiBACT.
The video work, which takes the form of a multimedia video installation through the use of intermediary devices, tells three stories that have gone through in a symbolic place in the history of the Salento area from 1960 to today: the former temporary residence Regina Pacis in San Foca, a seaside resort in the Municipality of Melendugno.
Originally used in the late sixties and mid-eighties as a summer camp for children, the structure was transformed from 1998 to 2006 in the largest Italian Temporary Reception Center (CAS) c.p.t., ended in the storm of many judicial scandals for the violence suffered by refugees. Today it is an abandoned structure with a high impact on the natural landscape that is about to become a five-star resort.
Regina Pacis represents a contradictory place of passage and border that, like Salento, in the last six decades has experienced a profound metamorphosis marked by three different moments of its history: the age of tradition and popular dimension (now lost), the years immigration (from the Balkans and North Africa) and the era of mass tourism. The place finds itself in continuous transformation according to the function designated by the present times, it remains indifferent to the destinies of those who live in there.
In the multimedia display, the three different realities find each other on the screen without interruption and interact with the viewer in an immersive way.
We want to reflect on how hospitality works, according to its different meanings: tourist reception as a result of the relationships (most often fictitious) of the tourist with the entire local system and the reception system in the area of asylum seekers, refugees and recipients of subsidiary protection.
Key concepts are analyzed, including sharing and its contradiction, the place intended as a custodian of memories, isolation, conflict and contamination.
The closing exhibition of the residence ‘Sino at the end of the sea’ and the presentation of the work ‘HALL’ are part of the off program of Lands End Contemporary Art Festival.
