ROBOTICS
Festival of Art and Robotics
First edition“Digital Nature”Trieste, from 17th to 28th November 2018
Main venue: Centrale Idrodinamica (Hydrodynamic Power Station) - Porto Vecchio
In Trieste, from 17th to 28th of November 2018, will be held the first edition of ROBOTICS - Festival of Art and Robotics on the theme "Digital Nature".
The Festival reflects on the tendency, in art as in science, to fuse organic systems with artificial ones in view of a symbiotic coevolution of nature and technology necessary for accelerated adaptations to new environmental scenarios and for a strengthening of human abilities. In the underlying techno-destiny of man, his relationship with the machine has undergone a shift, from mechatronics to bio-digital, i.e. from mechanical structures assisted by electronics, androids, to the fusion of digital data with the physicality of bodies, stimulating new artistic approaches.
The wide program develops around the exhibition, curated by Maria Campitelli and Valentino Catricalà, which brings together more than forty international artists in the spaces of the Hydrodynamic Power Station in Porto Vecchio (Old Port), including Bill Vorn (Canada), Ken Rinaldo (United States), France Cadet (France), Patrick Tresset (United Kingdom), AUDiNT (United Kingdom), Cirkulacija 2 (Slovenia), Sadam Fujioka (Japan), Lili Maya & James Rouvelle (United States), Manolo Cocho (Mexico), Luciana Esqueda (Mexico), Carolin Liebl & Nikolas Schmid-Pfähler (Germany), Antoni Abad (Spain), Paolo Gallina and students (Italy), Donato Piccolo (Italy), Roberto Pugliese (Italy), Simone Pappalardo (Italy), Dario D'Aronco (Italy), Christian Fogarolli (Italy), Alessandro Sciaraffa (Italy), Luigi Pagliarini (Italy), Salvatore Iaconesi and Oriana Persico (Italy), Mat Toan (Italy). These artists will be joined by artists and academics such as Paolo Atzori, Giorgio Cipolletta, Lorenzo Miglioli and Marcello Pecchioli.
The group show also includes the artists of the Gruppo78 who practice media art - Carlotta Buiatti, Cecilia Donaggio Luzzatto Fegiz, Fabiola Faidiga, Lucia Flego, Guillermo Giampietro, Max Jurcev, Kaartik, Nadja Moncheri, Lucio Perini, Paola Pisani, Paolo Toldo, Luigi Tolotti, Elisa Zurlo -, and presents the winning artwork of the open call under 25, which ROBOTICS wanted to reserve for young people: the immersive installation “Il peso di tutto quello che non c'è” by Iolanda Di Bonaventura.
At Hydrodynamic Power Station on the occasion of the opening on Saturday 17th and Sunday 18th November there will be the world premiere of the robotic show "Copacabana Machine Sex" by Bill Vorn. Ten robots dance, in an attempt to seduce each other and the audience, and machines produce music in a set that mixes the Broadway kitsch and the dark industrial look of his most recent works. The performance, which can be called "mechanical burlesque", does not want to replicate a real night club, but to generate a metaphorical extravaganza that answers the question: what would happen if machines were on the stage of a cabaret show?
Lectures by scholars, researchers and university professors contribute to deepen the issues faced by artists, such as artificial intelligence, the post-human and scenarios of the future. Among the many guests: Pier Luigi Capucci who will hold the inaugural lecture, entitled "Art and Robotics, the Nature at the edge of the living, Towards the third life", and then the professors Paolo Gallina, Giuseppe O. Longo, Eric Medvet (University of Trieste), Paolo Atzori (University of Udine), Giovanni Leghissa (University of Turin), Giorgio Cipolletta (University of Macerata), SISSA researchers Luca Heltaj, Francesca Rizzato, Elena Tea Rossi and Alessandro Laio.
The students of the Enrico and Umberto Nordio High School of Trieste are taking part in a workshop "learning by doing". Together with artists and specialized technicians, they create a video-installation animated by small robots that will be exhibited at the Hydrodynamic Power Station.
The SISSA - International School for Advanced Studies organizes workshops for the triennium of high schools proposing an interactive game that allows you to discover how a neural network from the inside functions.
At the Science Centre Immaginario Scientifico there will be a workshop with 3D viewers for young people and the video performance "Replay" by the artist Guillermo Giampietro.
In collaboration with the Film and Audio-visual Research and Experimentation Centre La Cappella Underground, famous science fiction films on artificial, humanoid and post-human intelligence will be shown.
Collateral events also involve the International Women's House of Trieste, the hackerspace Mittelab, CASA C.A.V.E. and BoArt of Bologna at Punto Giovani and Kulturni dom in Gorizia.
Conceived by Maria Campitelli with the collaboration of Valentino Catricalà, ROBOTICS is promoted by the Cultural Association Gruppo78 International Contemporary Art of Trieste, with the support of the Friuli Venezia Giulia Region, the Municipality of Trieste, the Kathleen Foreman Casali Foundation, CALQ Conseil des arts et des Lettres du Québec and the Concordia University of Montréal, with the collaboration of Science Centre Immaginario Scientifico, SISSA, the University of Trieste and the University of Udine.
The Festival is part of the PROESOF program, which gathers the initiatives that, from 2018, will lead to the EuroScience Open Forum 2020 with Trieste European City of Science.
